about

I. compel - /kəmˈpɛl/

- bring about (something) by the use of force or pressure [within]
"compelled by rhythmic repetition to dance"

- inspire to come or go in a particular direction [without]
"compelled to pursue a creative path"

II. expel - /ɛkˈspɛl/

- force out (something), especially from the body [within]
"emotion expelled through movement"

- force (someone) to leave a place [without]
"an outlet to temporarily expel the world from one's mind"

“Dance Compels, Dance Expels” stems from two things which tend to dominate much of my headspace: dance music and language.

With music, I like repetition a lot; not for the sake of beating a horse dead, but because a slow build gives the listener time to think about what is happening, and where something might be going. For dance (or at least the way I like to dance), it can be really important. When rhythm (a good rhythm) is properly identified, the body builds enough awareness to not only be compelled (to move), but “expel” from itself – emotions, etc.

I also enjoy repetitions with words: alliterations, rhymes, reduplications - above all, I think it’s humorous and fun - and like with dance music, words can carry repetitive rhythms that allow us to pick at what is being said, and maybe how we could consider saying something in the future.

To rhyme “compel” with “expel” became a scratch to the itch of titling something, but they are words which, for me, have a lot to do with the processes that surround dance music. Processes that are nothing new, yet which are hopefully given enough thought to.
